Sri Lanka has been ranked 6th among countries most affected by climate change in 2018 according to the 2020 Global Climate Risk Index (CRI) by German Watch. Japan, the Philippines, Germany, Madagascar and India are the top five affected countries on the list. The devastating monsoon season in India has been covered extensively by many international news outlets.
The deaths and economic gain due to dangerous weather conditions have are among the criteria the Global Climate Risk index takes into consideration.
The index revealed that 20 districts in Sri Lanka have been severely affected by the heavy monsoon rains, with people in the Galle and Kalutara districts were the most severely affected.
