Pharmaceutical giant Morrison PLC opened their new manufacturing plant and research and development facility late last week. Located in the Sri Lanka Nano Technology Park in Pitipana, Homagama, the facility is Morrison’s second factory in the island. The factory aims to begin commercial production early next year in line with the government’s aim to manufacture essential medicines locally. The facility is the island’s first European Union-Good Manufacturing Practice (EU-GMP) compliant oral solid dosage manufacturing plant in Sri Lanka.
Commencing operations in 1939, J.L. Morison Son & Jones (Ceylon) PLC and was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1964. Controlling stake of company was obtained by the Hemas Group in 2013. The company has over eight decades of experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing and many well known Sri Lankan over-the-counter brands such as Morison’s Gripe Mixture, Lacto Calamine, and Valmilex have been produced by them.
